For my part, however, the notion of a new take on the Jura spirit was an intriguing one, unconvinced as I was by the previous incarnations. Its initially aged in American white oak bourbon barrels before enjoying a finishing period in Oloroso sherry butts and bottled at 40 ABV. Such was the success of the Jura brand, the announcement earlier this year that the range was to be completely overhauled took many by surprise with fans mourning the loss of Origin, Superstition and Prophecy. The new Jura distillery was designed by famed architect William Delme-Evans and once in production, the spirit began to establish itself as a household name single malt. Seeking to halt the population decline, landowners Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith got together in 1963 and decided to bring distillation back to the island. Where once over a thousand people made their home on this beautiful island off Scotland’s western coast, there are now less than 200 inhabitants. Over the years that followed, the distillery buildings fell into ruin as all around them, the local population dwindled. After almost a century in operation, the strain of running a business in such a remote area began to have an effect and the distillery finally ceased production in 1901. ![]() Swallowing yields an unusual, split-second reset, in which an earthy vanilla flavor gives way to a rush of mild peat smoke, followed by a firm but not overwhelming burst of spice that flares up for next few seconds while leaving the tongue with that mellow, earthy vanilla coating.The original Craighouse distillery on the isle of Jura was created in 1810. Meanwhile the mouth starts to tingle lightly with the flavors of spices like cloves and nutmeg. The sip gets earthier from there as it gradually builds up while the few drops sit on the tongue, but never growing beyond a mild hint of peat smoke, sweet sherry, and coffee. A sip envelopes the tongue with a rich and mellow vanilla, slightly smoky like crème brûlée crust, but balanced by a subtly sweet flavor of golden raisins. Palate: The palate picks up unusually close to how the nose left off in this case, but amplified.
